Clara Barton was raised just as most middle-class girls in Oxford, Massachusetts. She was employed in education before the Civil War in the 1860s. She had no experience in medical care besides helping her invalid brother for two years in her early life, unknowing that she would become a historic figure in the world of health care. Clara Barton was a leading figure through her life, and was among the greatest of pioneers for establishing better standards of care for others by creating the American Red Cross. Clara Barton was born on Christmas Day, 1821. She was educated as a child and went into teaching at just seventeen years of age. Eventually, she even founded her own public school in Bordentown, New Jersey. After about a decade of teaching, she decided to move into languages and writing, and went to Clinton, New York to study at the Liberal Institute (Women). After her school appointed a man instead of her as the head, she moved to Washington D.C. to work in the U.S. Patent Office. This was revolutionary because she was the first woman to hold a position like this in the government (Women). Women in History. Clara Barton biography. Created/Last modified: June 09 2005.
